Canton Community Health Fund Opens Applications for Scholarships & Grants to Individuals & Organizations Improving Canton’s Health, Safety & Well-being

Canton, CT March 1, 2023…. The Canton Community Health Fund (CCHF), has opened its annual Scholarship and Grant applications process. CCHF encourages local students, other residents and non-profit organizations, whose efforts contribute to the overall health, safety, and well-being of our Canton community, to apply.

Both the DR. DITER’S LEGACY Scholarship application, and the COMMUNITY HEALTH, SAFETY & WELLNESS Grant application are due by April 30, 2023. Both applications are available online at www.cantoncommunityhealthfund.org. Awards will be announced in May/2023.

CCHF Chairperson Sylvia Cancela: “For many decades, CCHF’s award recipients have used their talents and dedication to our community, to support and positively impact the lives of our neighbors, friends and families. As Canton’s residents and organizations move forward in the coming years, we will proudly continue to fund their endeavors with purpose, determination and promise.”

Each year, CCHF awards scholarships and grants, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 per applicant. In 2022, when the Canton community was still feeling the repercussions of the Covid pandemic, CCHF funded scholastic and community grants worth nearly $50,000.

In 2023, CCHF is once again offering these two separate funding opportunities:

  1. DR. DITER’S LEGACY SCHOLARSHIPS: Dr. Edward Diters, a veteran Air Force Flight Surgeon, was Canton’s small-town physician, serving our community from his offices on Dowd Avenue. Upon his retirement, after 40 years, a scholarship fund was created to both recognize his commitment to public health, and to also inspire future generations to follow his path into the healthcare field.

Online applications are available at www.cantoncommunityhealthfund.org under the “Scholarships” tab. Applications are due by April 30, 2023.

 2. COMMUNITY HEALTH, SAFETY & WELLNESS GRANTS: With a focus on development, enhancement and support of educational programming and services, CCHF’s Grants have addressed a wide variety of health, safety and wellness needs throughout our community, including: food insecurity, fuel assistance, physical and mental well-being.

CCHF’s funding has also purchased critical tools, equipment and supplies for Canton’s first responders; sponsored substance-free events at Canton High School; and promoted the abilities of individuals with disabilities through recreation and empowerment programming.

Online applications are available at www.cantoncommunityhealthfund.org under the “Grants” tab.  Applications are due by April 30, 2023.

Canton Community Health Fund is a private foundation whose Mission dates back to 1918, when the Canton Visiting Nurses Association began championing the health, safety and well-being of our local community. An all-volunteer Board of Canton residents manages the investment of the Fund, programming and distribution of Community Grants and the Dr. Diter’s Legacy Scholarship.

We invite you to support CCHF’s Mission through gifts of your time, talents or monetary donations, which go directly back to benefit our community. Please contact CCHF’s Treasurer Kathy Wood, at kathleengwood@comcast.net for available opportunities to contribute to our community. Or for your convenience, you can also donate through our PayPal Account, under the About Us/Make A Difference tab of our website.
